Final Fantasy X contains a unique system for raising character's status and abilities, enabling them to progress safely throughout the entire course of the game. This system is known as the sphere grid.
The sphere grid because accessable early on in the game. Each character that is met and thrown into your party will have their own custom spot on this giant grid of ability and status'. For example, since Yuna uses white magic, she'll be pushed in the area where spells such as cure are located. Lulu will be put on the area of the grid that contains the black magic spells. It repeats like this for every other character based on their initial abilities.
In order for a character to advance on the grid they will need something known as ability points, also know as AP. The only way for you to gain AP is to have your party successfully defeat monsters in battle. However, not all characters will gain AP in battles unless they participate in some way, so make sure to have all characters you plan to use often act in battle, otherwise they might end up far behind in terms of skills learned from the sphere grid.
So, you know what the sphere grid is and how to get AP to learn more abilities, but exactly HOW do you get these abilities? Actually, it's a rather simple process.
Whenever a character has at least one AP stocked, you can head to the sphere grid. For everyone AP that a character has, it means they can move over one node from where they are currently standing. To better show you how this works, please see the diagram below and then read the explination that follows it. This will be a visual aid in learning.
you will notice it is labled. Your character is in the middle. You'll notice some lines connecting various circles, which are known as "nodes" Your character can move to the closest nodes. For example:
- That character can move to node 'nothing', '+2 magic", and 'cure'
- That character CANNOT move to that '+200' HP node since it is two nodes away.
Get how moving works? Good. Before you move, however, you'll want to learn the abilities around your character. You can learn abilities on all sides of your character as long as it's on a node that is only one away from them. So, with your character's current position, you will be able to activate the +2 magic and learn the cure ability. After you learn them, let's say you proceed to the cure node. You would have used up one AP, however, you'll now also be able to learn the +200 HP stat.
For each ability you learn, you will also need certain types of spheres. For example, you learn 'cure' you will need an ability sphere. If you want to learn more about spheres, see the items page.
That is really it for the sphere grid. Have fun building your characters! Besides that, below are the various attributes that are avaliable on the sphere grid. For a list of spells and abilities, you can go to the abilities page.
