New RPG Rumors for the Nintendo DS & Wii

November 23, 2007, 12:39 AM — Omar Discuss Topic

An unspecified Role Playing Game magazine proposes to us to discover new rumors on the Internet, in their category, "Rumors & Phantasms." Lets step away from the regular RPGs for a second. It seems as though Square Enix is leaning towards re-entering one of the most well established RPG characters in its time. The one fellow we've grown to know and favour, the plumber man with a moustache--yes, Mario--may quite possibly make a scene again. Super Mario RPG is said to come back, however, this time on Nintendo DS. It is even specified that during the course of the game, our hero's journey will include appearances from various characters emblematic of the universe of Final Fantasy. How exciting!

On another note, the famous Ogre Battle series could make its return on the Nintendo Wii. Yasumi Matsuno, who is at the origin of this series, would form a major part of this project.

Please note that the above information is only based on simple rumors. We will keep you all updated regarding any official details that come about in the upcoming months.

Square Enix Reports Financial Results

November 23, 2007, 12:20 AM — Omar Discuss Topic

Square Enix today released its financial results for the first half of the current fiscal year. Compared to the previous fiscal year, sales were down by 4.9% to 72.27 billion yen ($654.17 million USD). Net profit for the same period meanwhile rose by 32.5% to reach 4.4 billion yen ($39.83 million USD).

During the six month period from April 1st through September 30th, Square Enix's biggest hit was Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Despite hitting Japanese retail store shelves only on September 14th, the fourth installment of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII managed to sell 710,000 copies until September 30th. Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings (530,000 copies), the Wii debut title Dragon Quest Sword (490,000 copies), Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Ring of Fates (360,000 copies), and the PlayStation Portable release of Final Fantasy Tactics (320,000 copies) also contributed to a sales performance of 3.94 million copies in Japan. With the lack of any major releases, Square Enix's American and European divisions only sold 1.32 million and 1.61 million copies, respectively. In the US, the PlayStation Portable version of Final Fantasy was the only title to sell more than 100,000 copies, while the DS version of Final Fantasy III (450,000 copies) and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (170,000 copies) were the most successful titles in Europe.

For the full fiscal year ending on March 31st 2008, Square Enix expects to sell 13.5 million copies of software (down from 16.93 million last year). Furthermore, sales are projected to reach 162.5 billion yen ($1.47 billion USD) and net profit 12 billion yen ($108.62 million USD).

September 20, 2007, 12:17 AM — Omar Discuss Topic

Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII has sold about 350,000 copies on the day of its release in Japan. This was the best start for a recent handheld-based Final Fantasy game. For reference, the DS version of Final Fantasy III had sold 330,000 copies on the day of its release. Crisis Core Release Date Report

September 13, 2007, 6:22 PM — Omar Discuss Topic

Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII hit Japanese retail store shelves today. In addition to the game's standard version, the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Final Fantasy VII 10th Anniversary Limited Edition, which shipped with the remodeled PlayStation Portable, and the limited edition Anniversary Potion also went on sale today, resulting in many fans in Tokyo hitting the street to get the popular items.

In front of electronics chain Bic Camera's main store in Ikebukuro a row of more than 250 people had formed before the store opened its doors 30 minutes earlier than usual at 09:30 am. At 09:00 am about 200 people were queuing south of Ikebukuro at Yodobashi Camera's Shinjuku West store. Here, store managers also decided to open early, but the row still grew even further to 300 people. Square Enix's executive director Shinji Hashimoto also showed up in Shinjuku. He admitted he has had some worries, seeing how this is the first time a new hardware was sold one week prior to its launch date alongside a new game. However, looking at the fans queuing in front of the store apparently gave him some relief. Pointing to mothers with children in the queue, Hashimoto said he felt the flow of time since Final Fantasy VII was released in Japan a decade ago.

Meanwhile, staff at Yodobashi Camera's Shinjuku West store reported the obvious: A very quick sell-out of the limited edition hardware bundle. With the limited edition in customers' hands, retail is now looking forward to strong sales of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII's standard version.

First Star Ocean 4 Details Revealed

September 6, 2007, 7:59 PM — Gwynplaine Discuss Topic

The newest addition of Weekly Famitsuu featured a lengthy article about Star Ocean 4. Series producer Yoshinori Yamagishi and assitant producer Hajime Kojima sat down with Japan's leading magazine to talk about the newest installment of tri-Ace's flagship series. While the game has been confirmed to be in development for quite some time now, the target platform had been the subject of a lot of speculation. Sadly, the Famitsuu article does not put an end to this speculation, as tri-Ace has yet to make a decision regarding the target platform. Kojima only said that the game will be released for a platform (or platforms) capable of displaying beautiful visuals. This most likely means either PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360, or both.

The game's development has progressed to the point where the basics of the battle system are up and running. The development team still has to add "interesting" features, adjust the balance, etc. Once completed, the battle system will support up to four active party members. Compared to its counterpart in Star Ocean 3, it will have a different feel to it. The developers describe it as an "orthodox progression" of the prequel's battle system with new features.

Meanwhile, work on the game's story is already finished. Yamagishi was unwilling to give away any details regarding the era, in which the game takes place, saying only this bit of information would be revealed in a surprising fashion at Tokyo Game Show. Kojima, however, assured fans that characters and races from previous installments would appear in Star Ocean 4 and the world would be the same as well. He went on to explain that previous installments did not really have a "star ocean" feel to them, but in Star Ocean 4 it would be possible to travel through space in one's own spaceship. There will also be events centering around spaceship battles. tri-Ace is promising a huge world, as there will be a lot of planets, not just two or three. That being said, the game will not be entirely science fiction-oriented, but also offer a fair share of fantasy elements.

The game's protagonist is a blonde-haired young male named Edge Maverick, the heroine's name is Reimi. The two are apparently childhood friends. Private action events will also make their return in Star Ocean 4.

At the end of the interview, the tri-Ace representatives briefly touched on the subject of the Star Ocean and Star Ocean: The Second Story remakes for PlayStation Portable. The new Star Ocean will be a complete remake, featuring new scenario and gameplay elements. As for Star Ocean: The Second Story, tri-Ace was not so forthcoming with information. It was only stated that the game will offer a new experience, even to those fans who have already played the original game on PlayStation.

Star Ocean 4 has yet to receive an official release date.

Kingdom Hearts Prequels Coming?

August 29, 2007, 11:07 PM — Gwynplaine Discuss Topic

Recently a shocking peace of news has hit the surface. It seems that recently in the latest issue of EGM coming at you September 4th, there has been talk about prequels for the popular Kingdom Hearts series! Here's a direct quote from 1UP.com that comfirms this:

"Square Enix has been awful silent about the Kingdom Hearts franchise, but that doesn't mean it's gone and forgotten. To the contrary, in the latest issue of EGM -- hitting shelves September 4 -- Quartermann is abuzz about a series of prequels currently in-the-works for a number of consoles and handhelds. Think along the same lines as what's happened with Final Fantasy VII -- let's just hope the games are better this time."

Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon Goes Wii

August 29, 2007, 4:50 PM — Omar Discuss Topic

Square Enix has revived the Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon (Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon) series after eight years. The company plans to bring Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon Toki Wasure no Meikyuu to Wii later this year. The game is produced by Yuuki Yokoyama, who had previously worked on Chocobo to Mahou no Ehon and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, while Square Enix executive director Shinji Hashimoto is serving as executive producer.

The game's main characters will be treasure hunter Chocobo and Cid. The development team is implementing a Final Fantasy-like job system, where each job offers a unique set of abilities
(skills and magic).

The first Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon title became a big hit in Japan following its 1997 release on PlayStation. The following year, Square released a sequel, and in 1999 a WonderSwan
Color-based remake of the first game.

Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon Toki Wasure no Meikyuu will be available in Japan sometime this winter.
